The world needs weird music. My ambition is to help musicians create music that is interesting, diverse and thought-provoking; and help musicians engage with listeners who value their music.
My name is Liam Taylor, I'm a musician based in the UK, with a no BS attitude towards music creation. I'm fascinated by music theory, production, composition and musicology but by no means an expert.
I go live fairly regularly to make music in Cubase, answer your questions and to have some fun: Subscribe and tap the bell icon to get notified next time I'm live.

In this music production stream, we're getting GRUNGY. We're using Cubase 13 Pro because we make smart choices in life. This video is a re-upload of the live stream as there was an odd audio glitch during the broadcast. Oops. I can't answer ALL your questions, but I can certainly try. Outstanding. Solved a problem I just couldn't figure out. Thank you!
Happy to help!

28:00, I have noticed that you usually use the vintage compressor instead of the other. Is there any reason to do so? I usually struggle with the Cubase compressor to get a decent sound. Is the vintage compressor easier to use? I don't quite understand its parameters.
Great question - yes, you're right, I do use the vintage compressor a lot. Compressor plugins are interesting because they all basically do the same thing, they just achieve it in a slightly different way or try to emulate a specific piece of famous kit. The good news is that once you learn the settings for one compressor, you basically know how they all work. The bad news is that it's hard to know which compressor to use and when! I do like the basic compressor in Cubase, but I found the presets for bass and drums in the vintage compressor to be more satisfying. I like the tube compressor for guitars as well! Hope that helps!
@@LTGuitarist I tried using the Cubase compressor (not the vintage one, the other) for louder drums but usually I get a sound that feels weaker when compressed, I don't know why, like if part of the frequencies get lost. The compressor with threshold, analysis, etc., seems by far more complex than the vintage one, that is why I asked. Maybe the vintage one is simpler to use. Like I say, with the other I struggle a lot to make the sounds louder. I read a book about mixing but I'm still without knowing what I'm doing wrong when compressing. For melodic instruments I use the multiband compressor and I get louder sounds easily but for percussive sounds such as drums with a normal compressor I find it very difficult.
He has now evolved into Me'ium Wayne.
great video! helped a lot in setting up my dynacaster. almost went and bought a new dac though until I found out my phantom power was off but my pre amp setting was on. Perhaps an annotation during the part of the video where you describe setting up the gain?
THIS IS BORING IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF DIFERENT SAMPLE RATE FILES... how apply it automaticly when I import diferent files in project?
You can't do it automatically, this is the fix.
@@LTGuitarist Dialogue box when import is the unique solution about a lot of diferent files at import, thank you
Have a blessed day
HEY! There's a much newer version of this video - it's more concise, much easier to watch and more informative. You'll love it: ruclips.net/video/_UO8XKyXBc8/видео.html
Mate, thank you so much. Easy, quick, to the point and resolved the issue almost immediately
Happy to help bud!
I liked the chords analysis at the end. I was wondering which chords were the non-diatonic ones and which function they played. I always like to know the theory behind "weird" chords. I have composed for a long time basically with diatonic chords and I like to test new chords which are non-diatonic, so these things are very helpful. I don't understand very well the function of slash chords, though. I have been experimenting with them but the sound changes are sometimes too subtle and I don't get how that translates into bass lines (sometimes with a bunch of notes, and not just the root). And these days I'm experimenting with open voicings with pads/strings and I don't understand very well how they work, because if one wants to have them not too low and not too high, that is, in the same register more or less, inversions are mandatory, but that changes the bass note and sometimes I want it to be the root. I see that you don't usually use open voicings in your composition streamings so I guess it would be a good idea to do one about them?
Thank you very much!! you are the man! I spent 3 days for the solution on net but failed. your clip fixed it in 3 min. 👻
Yeeeess, that's what I like to hear! So happy to help man, all the best!
What if you DONT KNOW how to do all that?? How can you track the time signature and bpm in Cubase to tell you what it is ?
So the time sig is always 4/4 when you start a new project and the BPM is always 120. Both of those are in the transport panel (the moveable box with the play and stop buttons, etc) and you can change them by clicking and typing in new numbers. If you want to alter them through the course of a piece then you need to use tempo or time signature tracks, as per this video. Hope that helps, happy to answer any more questions!
Johnny St Cyr played one of these
To my ears the theme goes from the 70's, the blue and the orange sections, to the 80's, the purple section.
Nailed it, i mean thumbed it!
LOL! It just shows how ignorant those fans are, hilarious!

THANK YOU SO MUCH ive been looking for this a lot! very simple and easy to understand tbh :]
Happy to help :)
Can you suggest a bass synth for a beginner for p funk and disco sound? how about the behringer ms-1? Monologue Or spending more for the poly-d?
I'd love to try and help :) So I'm anti-Behringer in general. They're affordable, sure, but in my experience the price isn't worth what you sacrifice in build quality. They're also not very nice people. So, that aside... I love the monologue. Great value for the price, it integrates with other gear really well. You can set up sequences or play it live like a keyboard. I love the sound of it too, big fan. The only downside is the small sized keys, as my hands are particularly large, but that's not a problem for everyone. Hope that helps, I'd love to know how you get on!
@@LTGuitarist thank you for that advice. how about the minilogue or minilogue xd versus the monlogue? I just want to play live...for myself so I can sound like carl carlton or bernie worrell along with tracks I guess I'll play just on my laptop.
I've not personally played those, I'm sure someone's done like a product comparison video or something? I do highly recommend the monologue, I've just not tried the other models I'm afraid!
12:15, That made me startle. I didn't expect my nickname to be mentioned here 😮. I remember I asked that question about intros time ago. My nickname is because I was living in Japan and I picked the surname Asamiya from the 80's live action series "Sukeban Deka" and Shin is a name I thought as a nickname. The surname comes first because in Japan they write it that way but I should have put Shin Asamiya 😅. I usually watch your streams after, here, in RUclips, but as I said before I think I'm missing some of them because I can't find them in the channel or the streams playlist.
Hey! Yeah it's weird hearing your own name when you don't expect to XD All the live streams are archived in the playlist - it's currently the 3rd row on my Channel: ruclips.net/p/PLf_o4hrSq6nQDDLaHCuqpRQzfxrqgVwou :) I've just double-checked, that is all of them. There's also the Live tab on my Channel but that won't include streams that had to be uploaded manually.
@@LTGuitarist And about the playlist, yes, that is the one I have in my favourites but I think that around 300 is a very low number for the streamings you have been doing. Sometimes I see a notification of a live stream and then I search for it in the playlist later and I can't find it there. That is why I thought that some of them could be missing from the playlist. And in your channel videos tab it seems that not all the videos are listed. I have seen that in other channels as well. I don't know if it is some configuration or if RUclips does it automatically but I like browsing all the videos to see if I missed some interesting one and on those channels I can't.
Ok, so I had a rummage (it took ages) and there were about 40 vids that were, for no real reason, not on the playlist. I've added them now. Also worth remembering that the streams have been monthly for a while now, so obviously fewer than before !
@@LTGuitarist Yes, I know that you are now making longer videos and fewer but I have been noticing missing videos from the playlist since way before. I even think that there should be more than 40. But I'm glad that you added those. Now I have more streams to watch.
that like:dislike ratio has me upset but I guess that's standard for "hey guys, here's my opinion" I like the video, and appreciate the way you broke down your reasoning, it was constructive and brilliant
Thanks mate, really appreciate your comment :P
Nice! Hope you do more of these one day.
Yo! I think I might at some point XD

‘Playing without playing’. Look ma, I didn’t play one note, but it still made sounds. I’m magic.
This is embarassing. The guitar he smashes at the VMAs is on sale on reverb and it has tape on the back of the neck to help him more realistically mime the guitar playing. If I were a fan I would be insulted at him assuming I’m a moron. I just don’t see the point. Nothing gained. Would hate to be at a party and someone hand me a guitar and come off looking like a fraud and a schmuck!
Bro that was fake no way he was playing those notes and barely moving his hand, I'm a experienced guitar player I know what I'm talking about
Yes, that was straight to the point. Perfect.
Thank you sir !!
My pleasure :)
DUDEEE IVE BEEN LOOKING ALL NIGHT!!! any idea how to do in fl studio?
I copy/pasted this from Reddit. Let me know if it helps: "Open the Piano roll for the Pattern and instrument or sample that you want to change time signature for Piano roll options (top left arrow) → Time markers → Add time signature change…(Shift+Alt+T) Choose new time signature Move the marker - everything to the right of the time signature change marker will use the new time signature To delete or edit, right-click the marker" Here's the thread: www.reddit.com/r/FL_Studio/comments/bf40a6/changing_time_signature_mid_track/

I think you should remove ‘don’t’ from the title …
it's all about reverse-psychology... OR IS IT!?
Hi, how about the intonation? I use ernie ball super Slinky 9-42 and the last up to 3 months without losing intonation, but after 3 and a half months mostly, the won't get intonated so I change strings... These ones, how long they maintain intonation?
Slinky can last upto 6 months. I assume you have sweaty hands? or you dont wipe of your string after usage? There are many factors why ur Slinky lose tone but if you really like long lasting tone, go for Daddario XT's.
Intonation is more of a guitar issue than a string issue.
good
This is so fake 🤣🤣🤣
Lmao this is beautiful
Ive seen air guitar shreds that look more real than that. LOL
Nice! What guitar is that?
That's a Cort CR-Custom, I'm a big fan :)
